Keeping
Pets Safe
All
dogs and cats are required by law to be on a leash or confined to the owner's
property at all times. Invisible fencing
works well for most dogs and doesn’t interfere with views. However, you shouldn’t leave dogs outside
unattended, because invisible fencing doesn’t keep predators out! Even fairly large dogs can fall prey to
coyotes and mountain lions, but this article will focus on cats and small dogs.
Even
if you have a fenced yard, you should keep an eye on small dogs when they’re
outside. When left unattended, they can
become food for coyotes, bobcats, hawks, and owls, and fences don’t stop wild
animals.
Cats
can be a challenge for pet owners. They
are more wild than domesticated, and it may seem cruel to keep them indoors when
they’d really rather be outside hunting.
People tend to think that because of their wild nature, cats can take
care of themselves in any situation.
However, in Sandia Heights, letting cats roam free is really sentencing
them to death. Sooner or later, cats
allowed outside will become part of the food chain. They are easy prey for bobcats, coyotes,
foxes, owls and hawks. Even with a full
set of fangs and claws, a cat has no chance when caught outside. You can keep your cat happy indoors with a
cat tree positioned near a window and with interactive toys like feathers on a
stick.
Keeping Pets Safe in Coyote Country
Coyotes
provide an enjoyable wildlife viewing experience. Keep your distance and do not approach the
animals. Enjoy the opportunity to view these
fascinating creatures. Remember, it’s our responsibility to share our habitat
and live responsibly and harmoniously with wildlife!
